Atlas Engineering Group, Ltd. was a subconsultant for the preparation of a feasibility study to consider eliminating the at-grade crossing of Cottage Grove and the four Indiana Harbor Belt (IHB) and CSX tracks. Atlas was responsible for the concept design of the overhead and underpass bridges, retaining walls, railroad track temporary shoofly alignments, construction staging, roadway and railroad drainage, and a pump station. The project required coordination with the railroads, Cook County and Village of Dolton. The complex construction staging for the erection of the underpass bridges utilizes a bridge roll-in concept. The bridges would be erected on the permanent retaining walls for the underpass alternative south of the IHB tracks, then rolled into place during a planned railroad outage. The project received the 2022 ACEC Illinois – Engineering Excellence Special Award SA1.
