As the prime consultant, Atlas designed transverse stiffener retrofits for the exterior four girders of the bridge supporting the shoulders of I-294, and also developed the MOT plans. The exterior girders have a thin web (3/8”) and did not have transverse stiffeners as installed in 1983. The rating calculations performed by others determined that the operating rating for shear was unsatisfactory for the four girders at the center pier of the bridge. By adding stiffeners, the rating values increased and became acceptable for HS 20-44 truck loading. Coordination with the UPRR, IDOT, local agencies, and the JOC Contractor was required.
