AEG staff provided engineering design and technical management for ORD LLC O’Hare Runway Designers, JV on Chicago Department of Aviation’s O’Hare Modernization Program.

The design team which prepared a final design and construction package for Taxiway ZS as a part of future Runway 10R-28L improvements in connectivity to the existing Runway 4R-22L and to the core terminal. The Taxiway ZS is a 792-ft. long, 75-ft. wide extension of the existing, previously known Taxiway K. The pavement section consisted of a 17-inch PCC pavement over a 6-inch warm mix asphalt (WMA) base course over a 6-inch WMA permeable base course over a 12-inch aggregate frost protection course. As part of the airport’s sustainability initiative, this was the first project to use WMA as its runway base course and shoulder pavement. Responsibilities as Runway Design Team consisted of Taxiway ZS earthwork, earthwork management, by stage grading, pavements, geometrics, drainage grading and coordination, utilities grading and coordination.

ORD LLC was awarded a Green Airplane Certification for Sustainable Design by the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA). Taxiway ZS was cited for its ‘outstanding performance and lasting contribution to sustainable practices’ which is based on the CDA’s forward-thinking Sustainable Airport Manual (SAM).
